[OT] legal issues in archiving documents

archiving documents
I remember a thread that took place quite a while ago (although I don't
remember exactly how long ago) about the legal issue of keeping archives of
electronic documents, for legal purposes.

Since I'm now embarking on a project which may require this type of thing, I
wanted to research the issues, and thought that thread might be a good place
to start, but I'm having no luck searching the XML-DEV archives.

Can anyone point me in the direction of where I should be looking to
research this issue? (Or even point me at the name of the thread I'm
thinking of...) The project I'm working on is in Canada, so anything that
relates specifically to Canadian law would be best, but I'll take anything
at this point.

(Feel free to reply off-list, since this is off-topic, unless there are
XML-specific issues that should be shared with the list.)
