Paul,

I don't see anything particularly "strident" in Roy Fielding's comments. Perhaps you meant that his conclusion was extreme?

He was correcting a misapprehension expressed earlier that "W3C is, at heart, an academic organization." which is patently dubious. He correctly points out that W3C is a "pay-to-play consortium".

I would disagree with his conclusion that ".... then the W3C should not exist."

I think a much more constructive approach is to say that W3C should be improved. Not least important of such improvements is that W3C should be more open than it currently is.
