I can't point to specific examples in pop music (my musical tastes hit the wall at about 1827) but I seem to recall tales of phenomenally popular acts that are hyped to the stratosphere, yet their CDs *stay* on the loading docks if the hype diverges from the reality of public taste. There's no doubt that the "SOAP-RPC as the grand unification of DCOM and CORBA" paradigm looks like a monster hit from the early orders, but it has to actually WORK in order to stay on the charts.
