While I agree with the latter to a large degree, I don't think anyone could claim to be able to clearly articulate it's principals now, and honestly say that they could have done so 5 years ago. In other words, the principals you allude to are a modern invention. They might serve as great basis for ongoing development, but I doubt they were behind development to date.
