The very succint last sentence is the problem... once you start talking about HTTP+XML+MIME+xxxx, it is at least precise enough to discuss.

FWIW. I've noticed the same trend you noticed: fewer and fewer "normal" folk even talk about "the web". To them, as you say, it's "the internet". Not one "normal" person has mentioned XML to me....
