Quoting SGML ISO 8879-1986 Section 4.102:

   Document Type:  A class of documents having similar characteristics;
                   for example, journal, article, technical manual, or
                   memo.

Quoting SGML ISO 8879-1986 Section 4.105:

   Document Type Definition: Rules, determined by an application, that apply
                             SGML to the markup of documents of a particular
                             type. ...

This definition of DTD doesn't confer that Document Type is restricted to 
only SGML, just that the DTD is the SGML way of looking at a Document Type 
(i.e. a class of documents).

Going back to the roots of document markup, I think the term is very 
appropriate.
