While I am not a library scientist, I think the distinction is like this: A taxonomy organizes information into categories based on explicit rules. A controlled vocabulary is a limited set of terms that describe a collection of items. An ontology is a set of terms describing all the items in a given environment without regard to any classification or order. I'd happily be corrected as my knowledge in this area is evolving, but I think these distinctions are on target. --- Mike Champion <mc@x...> wrote: > Speaking of which .... what's the difference between > a taxonomy, a > controlled vocabulary, and an ontology? > > > > ----------------------------------------------------------------- > The xml-dev list is sponsored by XML.org > <http://www.xml.org>, an > initiative of OASIS <http://www.oasis-open.org> > > The list archives are at > http://lists.xml.org/archives/xml-dev/ > > To subscribe or unsubscribe from this list use the > subscription > manager: <http://lists.xml.org/ob/adm.pl> > __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
