Ok. The statement I've heard most often repeated from the beginning of the commercial use of markup was that it would be a fine data transport syntax if mixed models were thrown away (pernicious to the parser although common the actual data). That was it for common experience. So - - and /> pretty much summed it up. Then we talked about throwing away DTDs and that went to hell but as we all knew and said often, they were too hard and bloated the parser.
