This is easy.  SGML preserves options using the SGML 
Declaration.  The options have costs and require skill 
to handle.  XML is simpler but it removes the options. 
In SGML, Blueberry is a non-issue for Blueberry users 
because the way to handle it is defined.  It is an 
international standard created with these problems 
in mind.  XML is not an international standard.  It 
is a vendor consortium product subset from an international 
standard to ensure the business goals of the 
consortium members are met.   

This isn't complex or muffled.  It is a matter of 
priorities.  Blueberry can be seen as a test not 
of XML technology, but of the W3C's priorities.

Religion, philosophy, superstitions, and even science are memes, virus for
human mind, some are useful, some are destructive.  While religion offers
great deal of benefits, there are side effects as well.  I had my Zen phase
as well, but did not enjoy the fact that it affected my thinking and
communication pattern:  out of thirst, I drank and ended up a herring.

You have a great mind, Len, but your messages are muffled by the water.
While you probably have little cause to abandon the warm waters, rest of us
wonder what great ideas we are failing to contract.  Of course, I am
somewhat muffled too due to similar reasons, but I think I am an amphibian.
