As long as one understands that XLink is an 
application of XML, that works for me.  It isn't XML. 
It is an application of XML that XML designers 
and implementors can use with other applications 
of XML.  Just another namespace...

Most of the time if I get to a level where 
I need one higher level of abstraction, I  
am staring into the system tables.  In other 
words, it isn't a higher level, it is a strictly 
local property set for a "reasonable definition 
of local".  Sometimes I think URIs are good 
example of that.  HyTime defined types of 
locators.  HTTP defines a system for using 
one of those types.  URIs are the definition 
of the string HTTP uses.
