What is binary is the encoding rules (called BER or PER) that are associated with ASN.1. I recommend PER to people looking for compacity and encoding/decoding speed. > it has a rather direct mapping to/from XML. There is > a group working on that mapping. Why invent a format > when one already exists? Thanks so much! The ASN.1 group is currently meeting in Los Angeles to progress this work. One advantage in using a standardized solution vs. an ad-hoc one is that it improves interoperability. Information can be found at: http://asn1.elibel.tm.fr/xml/ If there are people interested in these mappings, it would be my pleasure to receive their comments (to me directly -- please indicate which mapping you're interested in: ASN.1 -> XML or XML -> ASN.1) and associate them to our work to make sure that we end up with what people are looking for. Finally allow me to say again that, even though ITU-T Recommendations and ISO standards are not usually freely available, ITU-T allows each and every one to freely download 3 Recommendations from their website (http://www.itu.int). -- Olivier DUBUISSON (ITU-T ASN.1 Rapporteur) france telecom R&D _ DTL/MSV - 22307 Lannion Cedex - France ( ) tel: +33 2 96 05 38 50 - fax: +33 2 96 05 39 45 / \/ -------------------------------------- \_/\ Site ASN.1 : http://asn1.elibel.tm.fr/
