If you look at the SAX 2.0 documentation for parse(InputSource) you will read:- "This method is synchronous: it will not return until parsing has ended. If a client application wants to terminate parsing early, it should throw an exception." So if you want to terminate the parse before the end of the xml document, your handler can throw a SAXException.
