If torn between "refactoring the XML spaghetti plate" and "reinventing the wheel", I would recommend the reading of this great address talk (OOPSLA'98 conference) by Guy Steele (one of the Java guys) about growing a language. The engine supports XML documents via DOM, SAX, relational storage, etc. I wrote down some comments about the issues related to the implementation.
