Opera is capable of supporting simple XLinks, though it does it through an
extension to CSS.  See:

I pulled that from a style sheet they included to support WML viewing.

That is useful information. Clearly Opera has been using a non-standard XLink
like functionality.

Perhaps they were waiting for a more stable specification than was the case
when you wrote your article.

With the availability of a Proposed Recommendation for XLink I hope they will
soon move to a standard XLink syntax.
