advantages of xml database
Kimbro and Terje has pointed out the benefits quite well.  Storing your documents as a persistent DOM will improve performance, allow you to retrieve fragments of the document in the right order and you can use XPath to query the document.  If your documents are small, the advantages will be minimal.
