a simple question

Hi,

I'm new on xml. I want to transfer an xml file into html format in server 
side. I have a servlet doing this with
xml and xsl as input files. My question is: how to produce
a blank line in the output html file? I tried following in xsl file:

<xsl:variable name="br" select="&lt; br>"/>
<xsl:value-of select="$br"/>

Then the output html shown on browser just has string
<br>

instead of inserting a blank line

Any advice?
