Hi Simon, Simon said: Most of my concerns revolved around the expectations that all the developers would work from the same location. Remote pair programming (irc? funky IDEs?) doesn't seem very plausible to me, and working in a home office, I'm not likely to bring folks over on a regular basis. Didier replies: Yes some adaptation has to be done. The XP book author seems to ignore the new tools like instant messaging, VOIP with video etc.. For instance, I am at home, with some broken bones :-( so I cannot move a lot, and I am working with my code partner on our doc.* stuff during the time my code partner is implementing the style sheet, I am writing about it, tomorrow I code and he writes. But several times in the day, we look at the code together with netmeeting and discuss about it. So, our own experience is that having a single machine for a duo is not necessary, both can have a machine but get trained to work on the same code unit, and both do not necessarily need to be in the same place since we can communicate together quite easily. Even share the same desktop with netmeeting (off course we both have a fast connection) Its a question of adapting the XP method to modern technologies. So even if XP seems a modern methodology, the XP book author obviously do not live with the 21st century tools :-) Off course we do not apply the XP techniques all the time, only when we have to learn something new and have to move in unknown lands like for instance, these times, to discover what is the best route to create content and get it published for cHTML, HDML, WML, HTML, SVG, SMIL and VoiceXML, whaaaaat a job! Being two brains on the same code (and if the two brains are bright) help tremendously. Conclusion: XP works but adapt it to your modern environment, the XP book author do not live in the same century as us :-) but some point he brought are inspiring. cheers Didier PH Martin ---------------------------------------------- Email: martind@n...
