While I agree that at the end of the day, you can't force
standards conformance on unwilling groups, I disagree with
the notion that you shouldn't try to encourage full 
compliance.

XML *syntax* compliance (especially for well-formend parsers)
is relatively easy to achieve, and should be the basis upon
which we can build *reliable* applications. If you can't
trust the foundations, you're toast.
