Need Information Set Clarification

information and clarification
Can someone please clarify the relationship of these statements
in the xml-infoset (07/28/2000) spec:

"Information items do not map one-to-one with the Nodes
of the DOM or the "tree" and "nodes" of the XPath data
model."

Then later in a Note:

"To the best of the editor's knowledge and belief,
the interface specified by the Document Object Model,
Level 1 Core Recommendation [DOM] conforms to the
XML Information Set as currently specified."

Sometimes I think I understand this, then I suffer
a lack of confidence attack. What is the relationship of
the InfoSet to the DOM, SAX, and XPath?
