Eric, actually many of these concepts are quite similar to XSet [http://www.openhealth.org/XSet/xml.xml] . XSet actually defines a detailed XML based expansion of an XML document, where the ultimate terminal nodes are elements of the type <char char="X"/> or <c hex="20"/> or <string value="!ENTITY"/> I've recently posted some examples of using XPath or XPointer as a way to address arbitrary details within an XML document, for example, the 3rd character in an attribute value, or the 5th whitespace character in the ... The way this is done is to use the XSet XML "expansion" of the native XML document. In many cases this is too detailed. I've posted an early example of a way to "prune" this XSet tree into "meaningful" information ala the Infoset. see http://www.openhealth.org/XSet/apigen.xsl , What I'm currently developing are vocabularies to prune, condense and transform XSet plans into arbitrary XML models which can be addressed via XPath/XPointer. Additionally the XMTP project will define an XSet XML expansion of an arbitrary MIME serialization. In this way XPath/XPointer can be used as a general addressing mechanism ala HyTime.
