Oh, of course the WG has had some use-case examples considered 
representative or important.

The trouble is that to specify a  large set of use-cases one needs a 
schema language and the bootstrap problem emerges.  So the WG has
instead gone with releasing regular drafts and asking the potential
user-base (e.g. XML-DEVers) to evaluate it against their needs.  

In any case, prior to selecting use-cases, one must still have first
decided on the application domains. 

But James' answer is interesting because it shows, I think, an
underlying expectation that XML Schemas will be useful for
all/most/many/any application domains. 

I don't know what the timetable for the next draft release will be for
XML Schemas: I think the WG had wanted to go to CR ASAP, but, given the
comprehensive review of the Last Call issues, it seems that other
Working Groups in the same position put out second Last Call drafts.
