Maybe you could generate XSLFO documents with scripts that perform this
work, and use 'dynamic XSLFO' to handle it...

(I wish I could figure out whether this proposal is real or merely
sarcastic, even though it's my proposal.  It's plausible, but seems
architecturally impure and all that.)
