This may be done automatically by code generators. Thus <confused> might be transformed into a class Confused. In many languages the '.' and '-' are operators and Confused.notion would not be allowed as a class name. I don't know if this is the original reason, but I discovered something similar the hard way and I avoid punctuation in names (except, or course, ':').
