It all comes down to use cases.

If all you want to do is send some information to another server then opening
a socket and throw away a few lines of XML or why not your own binary standard
is surely the fastest (cost wise and performance wise).

If you need support for more such as redirection, caching, chunking and
firewall support,
then HTTP may fit the bill. But remember that the web server or internet
environment of
today doesn't just consist of HTTP and content encodings such as XML or HTML,
it consists
of ASP, JSP, PHP,CGI,Cockies,Content Editors.............

However if you want a distributed object/computing environment then XML+HTTP
is definitely not enough, you need much more. Something similar to Corba or
DCOM
is needed..

And I have already noticed on XML-RPC list that someone asked for generators
that generates code for marshaling XML_RPC/SOAP messages. Well, that no news
for
Corba and DCOM.
