It's true that this is the case and is a perfect example of the 'keep it
simple' philosophy at work.
For all the hype around standards such as ICE for syndicating content, ICE
comes from the existing publisher world and is complicated. It is geared
around delivery of full text which is fine - but the web is a hypertext
medium and delivery metadata with links to original content avoids
duplication.
RSS is simple and the use of RSS syndication amongst weblogs is a ground up
phenomenon that is very weblike. If you like weblogs are part of a 'Webtop'
publishing revolution that will hopefully change content creation and
distribution the way Desktop publishing did a few years back. At
Moreover.com we've recently seen a dramatic increase in the ammount of our
content that people are taking through via our RSS output. What's good about
RSS is that the complexity will come later when people need it.
Perhaps now is the time for thinking how to take RSS forward and buld it
into a de facto syndication standard.
