How are attributes handled in Ranges?

Hi,

I have been trying to understand how attributes are handled as a part of a
range.
What I understand from the XPointer WD is that a range that starts within an
attribute value must also end within that attribute value, but what if the
attribute is carried by an element that is part of the range? Is the
attribute also in the range? And what if only the content of the element is
in the range? And what about ordering?

In the XPointer WD it says:
For a node-point with a zero index, the container node is also the
immediately preceding node unless it has any attribute or namespace nodes.
If the container node does have attribute or namespace nodes, then the
immediately preceding node is the last of those nodes.

So: the attribute is not one of the childnodes that can be identified using
the element as container and an index to point to the right node (this seams
right to me: attributes are not on the child axis). But for the first child
element, the last attribute of the parent _is_ the immediately preceding
node.

This confuses me a little. Maybe it's not that important, but if anyone
could clear this up for me, I'd be grateful.

Thx,

Teun Duynstee
