In my W3C experience, that's far and away the best way to get invited. Postings here and on the public w3c lists that are sympathetic to the objectives of some WG but contain detailed, helpful critiques and suggestions that are directly relevant to the public draft of some spec will be much appreciated by the Chairs and will get you considered as an invited expert if the need arises. xml-dev: A list for W3C XML Developers.
