I think it is valuable to have a minimal copyright which preserves authors'
moral rights. My (limited) understanding of "public domain" is that anyone
can do anything with a PD document, including scraping off the original
author's name and replacing it with others or modifying the content to the
detriment of the author(s) intentions. This could happen without malice -
the commonest might be abbreviating a document which changed the intention
of the author. A good example of this - which I appreciate and respect - is
that Jon Bosak requires that his Shakespeare/Religion XML examples not be
modified. My feeling is that "reference" documents like APIs should also
not be modified, certainly not by unmarked deletions.
