Well, I think DTDs and other schemata can be useful (I would have less error-checking code in FOP if I used a validating parser), but I agree that a myth has arisen that DTDs (and especially schemata in new schema languages) do a lot more than they actual do. My favourite myth is that a schema tells you what an XML document means. Last week I ran a course at SD99 on practical DTD design and my first slide was a list of the things a schema *doesn't* do.
