<< Data vs Publishing? How do you define the boundaries there?

Data interchange:
computer -> computer (or application -> application)

The consumer is another application. Often used for business-to-business
(B2B) integration.

Publishing:
computer -> person.

The consumer is a person. The XML is used to render a page for a person to
view.

We surveyed this at three recent conferences and no one seemed confused
about the distinction.

<< We're commonly taking SGML/XML markup of 'publishing' data (abstracts,
titles, authors,
etc) and using this data as XML messages ('data') between systems.

A book distributor sending orders to a publishing house using XML for data
interchange (B2B integration, e-commerce messaging, etc.). A distributor
might send catalog updates in XML to a retailer (data interchange), and the
retailer renders new HTML pages for a Web site (publishing).
