size of the processor
Think about how hard it was to hand crank a car engine to start it.

Subject: SML: The size of the processor is not the issue

Guys,

There is a lot of talk about how trivial it is to add support
for syntactic feature X to an XML processor and how the gains
of removing it in a putative SML are just not worth it.

I believe this is missing the point.

Imagine a world swimming in XML. *Everything* from Spreadsheet
file formats to HTML will be well formed XML.

It follows that a lot of XML processing will revolve around
transforming XML from one form to another.

It is in this space, transforming XML to XML, that the cost
of all XML 1.0 features are paid. Take the most trivial XML
to XML transformation -- the null transformation. Think about
how hard it is do this for arbirtary XML 1.0 documents.

regards,
