Any kind of lossiness.

I would like to think so. The following potential requirements worry me:

(a) Mapping should preserve attribute namespaces.
(b) Mapped attributes of XML should be occur as elements in SML.
(c) Attribute namespaces should be represented in SML using XML namespaces.

Reasons for having these requirements follow:

(a) Namespaces are necessary semantic markers.
(b) Attribute values should be addressable in SML without having to first interpret the SML as encoded XML.
(c) We should leverage all existing namespace-aware code (whether in the parser or in the application).
