Interesting article.

The speed increase you saw as the Java parser ate bigger documents was
probably due to the JIT compiler, dontchathink?  I wonder what would happen
if you compiled the JIT down to machine code, rather than p-code (like you
can with Symantec's tools on x86).  It'd then be interesting to see how the
Java implementation compares to the C ones.

I also wonder how much of the Perl time is spent starting the interpreter.
Since the primary use of Perl to munch XML is going to be in a web server
environment, I would expect it to be done using a technique like the .PLX
thing my sysadmin guy did on our NT machine (I don't know exactly how that
worked, but it somehow eliminated lots of process startup time and made all
our Perl scripts run much, much faster).
