The mapping that AFs enable is too limiting in my experience. Case in point: at XML 98 in Chicago the GCA issued a DTD for paper submissions. I wrote a paper for that confernence using XML. Along comes XML Europe 99 a variation on the DTD for paper submissions. Even this mapping between two DTDs from the same broad organization in the same ballpark of document types cannot be done with AFs.
