[XML-DEV Mailing List Archive Home] [By Thread] [By Date] [Recent Entries] [Reply To This Message] [Announce] rpm2html-1.0 and rpmfind-1.0
The version 1.0 of rpm2html and rpmfind tools has been released. I send the announcement to these lists to provide an example of an actual use of RDF based metadata. I have just seen too many mails like "there is no XML/RDF applications" so this is at least one ! To put it in a nutshell, rpm2html is a metadata extractor for RPM software package (Redhat/linux packages but this have been ported to other platforms), it generates both HTML pages and XML/RDF Metadata for these packages. The RDF metadata are in turn mirrored and used to produce mirror web sites. The metadata database also contains informations about the RDF databases mirrors (half a dozen worldwide). So this is an example of the use of XML/RDF for Web sites replication. But the most important use of these RDF databases is the rpmfind tool. On a platform where the RPM packaging system is installed, rpmfind allow to search, locate, upgrade and transfer software. The transfers are done through HTTP (or FTP for the downloads), and the mirrors metadata are used to select the closest available RDF and FTP mirrors. Rpmfind also does the dependencies checking between packages to avoid the problems related to incompatible or not up-to-date libraries. The software is based on the RPM library, an XML parser/generator, a small RDF API, libWWW for the network accesses and some glue code. Rpm2html also has some extra code for extracting the metadata, generating indexes and producing HTML code. Some figures: 1000 downloads of rpmfind-1.0 in one week, 32000+ packages indexed (25+ GB), 800 MBytes of generated HTML, 250MBytes of RDF files, 75000 hits/months for the RDF files, 1MHits/m for the HTML output on rufus mirror.
