Egad! I meant: "Even though there need be no separation between XML and
other uses of SGML (they all live on a continuous complexity continuum), 
there could still be separate publications, newsgroups and mailing 
lists for XML."

Re: Consortia: I'm not sure that XML consortia make sense. XML usage will
soon be so diverse that I'm not sure that various "XML" companies would 
have much in common to discuss. It strikes me as somewhat like an 
"HTTP" consortia. SGML was already showing signs of that problem despite 
the community's emphasis on document processing. XML will have 
succeeded when people choose not to get together and talk about XML, 
but rather about XML-based OO protocols, XML-document processing, 
XML-knowledge representation and so forth.
