i have written an xpath query like
"/root/child/xx:grandchild/@value/"
which is throwing an error

Your XSLT is missing a name-space declaration, you should see in your input document something like this

xmlns:xx="..."

Copy the declaration in the style-sheet element and the error should go away.

<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0"
xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform"
xmlns:xx="...">
