Steve CuznerSubject: How to validate via catalog lookup
Author: Steve Cuzner

I'm trying to associate a schema with an xml instance document via a user catalog. My catalog is:

<!DOCTYPE catalog PUBLIC "-//OASIS//DTD XML Catalogs V1.0//EN" "http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/entity/release/1.0/catalog.dtd">
<catalog
xmlns="urn:oasis:names:tc:entity:xmlns:xml:catalog">
<group prefer="public">
<public publicId="-//IRS//DTD IRMx Version 1.0//EN" uri="IRMx.dtd"/>
<public publicId="-//IRS//ENTITIES IRM Limited Character Set//EN" uri="../../entities/irsirm.ent"/>
<uri name="urn:us:gov:treasury:irs:irm-1.0" uri="IRMx.xsd"/>
</group>
</catalog>

and I have an instance that starts with:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><manual catno="12345" xmlns="urn:us:gov:treasury:irs:irm-1.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"></manual>

The instance, xsd, and catalog file are all in the project. When I select validate from the xml menu, it get a message that says:

Validating schematest.xml...
The XML file does not have a schema to validate against.

I'm using ss 2007 r2 Enterprise.

What am I doing wrong?

Catalogs do logical to physical mapping.
They do not add validation to existing documents.

In other words, they let you redirect requests for
existing resources.

Your XML does not ask for a schema or DTD, therefore
the catalog won't help.

What you probably want to do is to create a folder
in the project, and assign that folder a schema.
Then everything in that folder will be validated
against a given schema.

Tony,

Thanks, this helped. I'm using another product for primary authoring of content and they have a system where if there isn't a SchemaLocation or noNamespaceSchemaLocation specified, they look for a mapping between the namespace of the document and a schema by a catalog lookup. I was assuming that ss would support in the same way.
