When trying to open any xml or xsl file (even when using the default example files provided with the installation) I get the error message :

Design; Failure 1; 80040154
Please report to technical support

What's the problem ??

Your installation of IE5 is likely corrupted. Reinstalling the latest IE5 usually solves this problem.

I got the same message. I haven't installed the IE5. I am using Netscape 4.5.

I want to use Stylus to convert XML-outputs from a database to static HTML-Pages and other printable formats. Is Stylus the wright software to do this. Do I need IE5 as an XML-capable browser to do this?

The Stylus installer should have prompted you to install IE5. You can, of course, install IE5 and continue to use Netscape as your default browser.

Using Stylus to create XSL stylesheets is a good way to convert XML to HTML. For batch processing of multiple XML+XSL->HTML conversions, we recommend using Stylus to create your stylesheet(s) and then using Xalan or XT (both freeware) from the command line.

Although Stylus can optionally make use of IE5's XML features, they are not usually needed. Stylus requires IE5 for other components unrelated to XML.
