Gopalkrishna SathyanarayanaSubject: XSLT for XML to RTF Conversion
Author: Gopalkrishna Sathyanarayana

Hi All,
I have an XML file which i need to convert to RTF & HTML format. I have written stylesheet(xslt) for
both RTF & HTML conversion. XSLT to render HTML is working absolutely fine. The output should have images
,tables,Table of contents and breking up the text in to multiple pages,section,paragraph....
I can do all these things for HTML conversion.
How do i get all these options for RTF conversion? i am able to do some simple text formating but nothing else

Here with i am attaching the Source XML file and also the HTML oupput of the xml file. Can some body help me
to build the XSLT for RTF conversion especially for Tables,TOC,Images,Pagebreaks, section breaks......

Thanks in Advance
Gopalkrishna K.S

Really, the best way is to make a document in Word (or some other
tool that supports RTF) that looks like your target document, and
save it as RTF, then build the XSLT from that. RTF isn't very
complicated to use in a 'fill-in-the-blanks' type of problem like
you are looking for.

There are two previous posts on this subject; I hope they can help.

Hi
Thanks for the reply, I tried doing that by opening the RTF document in
notepad to see the RTF formatting tags. But I really could not make anything
out of that as there were lots of junk.

Hi,
I agree that RTF looks like junk characters; in short, it embeds control
codes in the document text, using "\" as the escape character.
For instance, a string like "\b text\b0" represents "text" using a bold font.
You can read the specs for RTF 1.6 (used by Microsoft Word 2000) at this URL:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnrtfspec/html/rtfspec.asp

Hope this helps,
Alberto

RTF is also rather forgiving. Word by default writes out a lot of extra
tags, but you can get along rather well by simplifying and just emitting
the tags that you need.

To see how much you can ignore, check out the examples referred to
earlier. Load them, and then immediately re-save them from Word. Notice
how much it adds?

Following Alberto's advice, and looking carefully at the specification,
you will see how little you actually have to emit from your XSLT to get
really good output.

Using Google, I found a more complex example. See

Hi
I am attacking the same problem. There seems to be very little being done in the OSF world to directly deal with this problem. I'm interested in developing a GUI interface to read documents created in Word Processors (for example) and then merging data content with RTF 'tags' to create styled documents.
I am keen to talk to anyone who has tackled this task.
