1.2 NCEA Level 2 Candidates with a Merit Average - Candidates who hold NCEA level 2 with a merit average should contact the department to explore their options for entry to the programme. 1.3 Cambridge International Examinations - 120 points on the UCAS Tariff with a minimum grade of D in at least three subjects equivalent to those in the list approved for NZUEBS and NCEA at AS, A2 (or A) level; PLUS A minimum D pass in IGCSE Mathematics; PLUS A minimum E pass in AS English. Candidates must meet the equivalent science requirements as specified for NCEA level 2. Applicants who do not meet all the entry requirement should contact the Department of Nursing and Health Studies to explore their options. 1.4 Mature Entry - Mature entry is available for applicants 20 years of age and over, with relevant work experience. Students who have completed the Foundation Education Programme and gained B grades or higher in all subjects will be offered a place on the BN programme subject to referee reports and available places. Compulsory subjects are: Communication Plus, Advanced Science, Chemistry and Mathematics. Students who did not achieve B grades or higher will be considered on an individual basis.
 An applicant whose first language is not English, or who comes from a country where the general language of instruction in schools is other than English, shall produce evidence to the Selection Committee of having passed the Academic IELTS or the ELPT test plus speaking assessment with an overall score of 6.5.

Students with English as a second language who have achieved a B grade or higher in the Communication Plus course of the Foundation Education programme offered at MIT will be interviewed and may be exempt from IELTS or ELPT testing.
 Each applicant is required to submit the names of at least two referees who are able to affirm that the applicant is of good character and reputation and is likely to be a 'fit and proper' person to register as a Registered Nurse. Relatives may not be used as referees. Referees must have known the applicant for at least two years.  The applicant's level of health shall be such that it is possible to achieve the competencies required for registration as a nurse. A health declaration is required and further reports may be requested with the consent of the applicant. Immune status must be provided for specified diseases/conditions as determined by the department from time to time. Applicants are required to declare all criminal or pending criminal convictions with enrolment. Police Screening is required for all applicants. In cases where a previous criminal conviction have been reported, applicants will be interviewed by the Head of Department and their prospects of gaining registration upon successful completion of the programme will be outlined. To maintain confidentiality of information related to patients/clients, all students are required to sign a confidentiality agreement. 
The applicant must be able to attend practicum at specified times and places.

In the case of those students for whom English is a second language, Nursing council advise that evidence of having passed one of the following tests be provided: Pass the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) examination. The original certificate of the English Language test results should be sent to the Department of Nursing &amp; Health Studies administration office. Students withno seagoing experience:  Sixth Form Certificate marks totalling 20 or less over the best four subjects with Sixth Form Certificate in English language and either Mathematics or Physics marks of 5 or less.  NCEA:  A minimum of 48 credits at level 2 and above, including a minimum of 14 credits at level 2 or higher in English language and either Mathematics or Physics, or Bursary marks totally 165 or more in 4 subjects including English language and either mathematics or Physics.  Such students should also have completed the academic component of the MIT Certificate Seamanship or have been enrolled in theexisting Second Mate Foreign Going programme.  Mixtures of conventional qualifcations (SFC and Bursary) and NCEA qualifications at different levels, as well as Cambridge - and Baccalaureate systems, will be considered on an individual, case by case basis.  Students already at sea:  No additional formal academic requirement, however, evidence will be required that the student is able to cope with the study demands of a level 5 programme.         <ENTRY_REQUIREMENT>Must be 17 years of age or older, all applicants will be interviewed. And where English is a second language applicants will be required to provide evidence of gaining a grade 6 or better result in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the English Language Proficiency (ELP) test. Need a minimum overall grade 6 with a minimum grade 6 in both listening and speaking. And all applicants will be asked to declare criminal convictions.  A criminal record will not automatically exclude an applicant from entry to the programme, however crimes against another person will be taken very seriously.  Factors taken into account will include: seriousness of the offense; the age at which it was committed; the length of time since it was committed; letters of support from community agencies/organisations Where applicants declare a criminal conviction the final decisions regarding entry to the programme will be made by the Programme Committee. And one of the following:
4 years secondary schooling or 3 years secondary schooling and 1 year post-school experience or mature entry is available for applicants 20 years and over, with relevant work experience. All applicants will provide two character references from people of standing in their community.         <ENTRY_REQUIREMENT>A person must be working (voluntarily or paid employment) a minimum of 15 hours a week in a licensed and chartered early childhood setting.  In exceptional circumstances this may be varied with the approval of the Early Childhood Programme Committee. Be supported by the centre where they are working to undertake centre based teacher education.  A letter of support must accompany the application. Applicants must; Provide 2 referee statements using prescribed Referee forms.  One of the referees must be someone who has observed the applicant working with children. Sign an acknowledgement in regards to criminal convictions and consent to a police check. Sign an acknowledgement that they are in good health (having no medical, physical or psychological conditions that would preclude working with children for long periods of time). Be 17 years of age as at admission. Have gained a sixth form certificate with a maximum grade total of 20 in four or more subjects including a 5 or better in English.  A grade 5 or better in Maori, supported by no more than a grade 6 English may be considered.  OR
NCEA year 12 minimum of 48 credits at level 2 with minimum of 12 credits in English or minimum of 12 credits in Maori+10 credits in English year 13 minimum 14 credits at level 3 in 3 subjects. Have gained a minimum of three C level passes in the Universities Bursaries Examination.  NZCEA credits equivalent to bursary will be accepted when confirmed or; Have gained a diploma (level five or above) or degree from a New Zealand tertiary institution or; In the absence of the above academic requirements can satisfactorily prove they have the potential for tertiary study and has satisfied the Programme Committee that he/she is capable of undertaking the course of study proposed.  (Supplies a detailed account of educational background and experience in place of sixth form certificate that indicates a commitment to early childhood, experience with children, and openness to learning; supported by references to attestations from persons who have observed the applicant working with children and can comment on their potential for tertiary study) and Demonstrate competence in English.  In exceptional circumstances, applicants who are between 17 and 20 and who are not immediate school leavers may be granted provisional acceptance to the programme at the discretion of the Diploma of Teaching (ECE) selection committee and with the approval of the Early Childhood programme committee or; Be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident 20 years of age at admission.

Demonstrate competence in English.
