 Physical Description of a Bike A bicycle is a made up of a number of movable components whereby all the mechanics are completely exposed. There are no covers or sheet metal panels hiding anything, it is all out in the open. Therefore a bike can be disassembled into its individual components if necessary when inspection, maintenance or repair is required.

The parts that you can immediately identify on a bike are: The Frame a bicycle frame is composed of metal tubes welded together. The Wheels ( REAR, FRONT) The wheels consist of a hub, the spokes, the metal rim and the rubber tyre. The Seat and seat post These fit into the seat tube with a mechanism for changing height The handle bars A horizontal bar attached to the stem with grips at the ends to which attach brake levers and shifters. Handle bar stem A piece that attaches the handle bar to the steering tube (head set). The Cranks A lever extending from the bottom of the bracket to the pedal. The Pedals Platform for the foot which is attached to the crank. Chain Circular set of links connecting the chain ring to cogs on the freewheel. Gears These consist of the front chain ring, the rear freewheel, the front and rear derailleur, the shift lever on the handle bars and the cables. Brakes These consist of the actuators located on the handlebars, the brake cable the brake callipers and brake pads.
