Soren HojbjergSubject: Ignores debug breakpoints in XSLT
Author: Soren Hojbjerg

I have problems with debugging XSLT in StylusStudio.

Version info as follows:

Build 1910e
Java Virtual Machine: 1.6.0_26
Processor: Saxon 9.4.0.6 (debuggable)

I have a sizeable (1200 line) XSLT where I have activated a number of breakpoints. All breakpoints are in areas where the XSLT has got to run. Regardless of whether I use F5 or green debug symbol, the breakpoints are ignored. The XSLT merely runs. The same happens with a much smaller XSLT.

I can do a trick that will allow single stepping. If I use F5 and quickly click yellow debug symbol, program stops at the first template match, and I can single step with F10 and F11. However, this is not a sustainable method of debugging.

Any hints on how to get over this obstacle?

Hi Soren,

Thank you for reporting this.

If you debug examples\simpleMappings\sampleBooksToCatalog.xsl does it stop there?

Are you running Saxon in Basic configuration or Schema-aware?
For Schema-aware, is Generate Bytecode enabled?

Does the debugger block with a breakpoint in root template (match="/")?
Do you make use of any extesions?

Thanks

Hi,

Answers to your questions as follows:

If you debug examples\simpleMappings\sampleBooksToCatalog.xsl does it stop there?
- Yes. It stops in this example, if I insert a breakpoint.

Are you running Saxon in Basic configuration or Schema-aware?
- Schema aware.

For Schema-aware, is Generate Bytecode enabled?
- Yes. Generate Bytecode is enabled.

Does the debugger block with a breakpoint in root template (match="/")?
- No. It ignores a breakpoint in the root template on <xsl:template match="/">

Do you make use of any extesions?
- I do not understand this. Extensions? Probabaly not, since I do not know what you are referring to.

Best regards

Soren

Hi again, Ivan,

I think this is a memory problem. For the experiment of it, I closed all other open files, and kept only the XSLT in question open. Suddenly the debugger stops at the first breakpoint. It seems to work.

I have seen a number of such problems in the discussion forum. Perhaps a suggested 'fix' is to close unecessary open files and/or break down the XSLT into smaller portions, when encountering this form of behaviour.

I will consider this matter closed.

Best regards

Soren

We will continue to investigate. At minimum Stylus Studio should detect these conditions and should report some kind of memory error.

Thank you for your help
