seth wbSubject: trying to sort a list of articles into an archive format, 3 of each type in its own div...

Hello I have a page pulling in 50+ articles on a page and i need to use XSLT to display only the top 3 for each "type" and sort those 3 of each type into their own div on the page, this is what I'm going for so far, but I haven't been able to figure out the "only select the first 3" part... can anyone help point me in the right direction?
<xsl:for-each select="ARTICLES/ARTICLE">
<xsl:choose>
<xsl:when test="contains(ASSETS/ASSET/TYPE,'01')">
<div style="width: 100px; height: 100px;border: 12px solid #CCCCCC;">01</div>
</xsl:when>
<xsl:when test="contains(ASSETS/ASSET/TYPE,' 02')">
<div style="width: 100px; height: 100px;border: 12px solid #CCCCCC;">02</div>
</xsl:when>
<xsl:when test="contains(ASSETS/ASSET/TYPE,' 03')">
<div style="width: 100px; height: 100px;border: 12px solid #CCCCCC;">03</div>
</xsl:when>
<xsl:otherwise>
<div style="width: 100px; height: 100px;border: 12px solid #CCCCCC;">Otherwise only</div>
<xsl:value-of select="TYPE"/>.<br/>
</xsl:otherwise>
</xsl:choose>
</xsl:for-each>
