problem mapping converted field or empty value

xml A XML B
<element>field</element>---->function----><element attribute='field'/>

samples
dataset1 'test' <element attribute='1'/>
dataset2 '' <element />

So if the field has data the attribute should be set to 1
If the field is empty the attibute should be deleted.

Which function do i need with xquery to do the above this???
I have only experience with the replace function.

Many thanks in advance
Erik
