vt 101Subject: Looping through xml document

This is my first post and I could really could do with some help, I'm a bit new to xsl!

I have an xml like so:

<document>
<data>
<row index=0>
<item_id>1</item_id>
<price>700.00<price>
<picture>1.jpg</picture>
<description>A blue vase</description>
</row>

<row index=1>
<item_id>2</item_id>
<price>600.00<price>
<picture>25.jpg</picture>
<description>A brass clock</description>
</row>

<row index=2>
<item_id>1</item_id>
<price>700.00<price>
<picture>2.jpg</picture>
<description>A blue vase</description>
</row>

<row index=3>
<item_id>1</item_id>
<price>700.00<price>
<picture>3.jpg</picture>
<description>A blue vase</description>
</row>

<row index=4>
<item_id>3</item_id>
<price>500.00<price>
<picture>21.jpg</picture>
<description>A ceramic bowl</description>
</row>
</data>
</document>

Basically what I need to do, is loop through this so I have a resulting xml document that has one row set for each item_id but includes all the pictures for the item_id as well as the other nodes. So the result would look like:

<document>
<data>
<row index=0>
<item_id>1</item_id>
<price>700.00<price>
<picture>1.jpg</picture>
<picture1>2.jpg</picture1>
<picture2>3.jpg</picture1>
<description>A blue vase</description>
</row>

<row index=1>
<item_id>2</item_id>
<price>600.00<price>
<picture>25.jpg</picture>
<description>A brass clock</description>
</row>

<row index=4>
<item_id>3</item_id>
<price>500.00<price>
<picture>21.jpg</picture>
<description>A ceramic bowl</description>
</row>
</data>
</document>

I have experimented with for-each and for-each-group in xslt 2.0 but cannot seem to figure this out.

Many Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

What you want to do is a grouping operation based on the <description> node: have a look at http://www.jenitennison.com/xslt/grouping/index.html for the explanation of various techniques.

I came across the method you quoted late last night and managed to implement it.

Very powerful and thanks for the tip!
