Matthias FuellerSubject: XSD semantic structure comparison
Author: Matthias Fueller

Hello all,

I would like to compare two XSD files that have the same semantic structure but are organized different with regard to types etc.

For instance, schema one looks like this:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<xsd:schema xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">
<xsd:element name="Root">
<xsd:complexType>
<xsd:sequence>
<xsd:element name="Child"/>
</xsd:sequence>
</xsd:complexType>
</xsd:element>
</xsd:schema>

...and schema two looks like this:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<xsd:schema xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">
<xsd:element name="Root" type="RootType"/>
<xsd:complexType name="RootType">
<xsd:sequence>
<xsd:element name="Child"/>
</xsd:sequence>
</xsd:complexType>
</xsd:schema>

They refer to the same XML structure, but one is using types and the other not, but I don't care about that. Is there any easy way to only display the semantic differences between the structures?

Or perhaps there is some kind of XSD canonicalization tool that transforms the two XSDs into some canonical form so that I can run a textual diff on it? Haven't found such a thing yet...:-(

Any help is appreciated!

Cheers,
Matthias

Hi Matthias,
the only option that comes to my mind is to ask Stylus Studio to generate a sample XML out of each Root element, save them and compare using XMLDiff. If they match, they describe the same structure.

Hope this helps,
Alberto
