Matthew FadoulSubject: License issues related to XQuery and Java Code Generation
Author: Matthew Fadoul

In the XQuery pull-down menu, I selected "Generate Java Code" and produced a Java file. Unfortunately, I received the following error:

Exception in thread "main" com.ddtek.xquery3.XQException: [DataDirect][XQuery]The evaluation period for DataDirect XQuery has expired. Please contact DataDirect Technologies to purchase a valid license.

I purchased the 2007 Enterprise Edition, and am a bit confused as to the implications of this error. Does this mean that I don't have the ability to compile anything that I auto-generate inside Stylus Studio?

As a Stylus Studio customer (without being a DataDirect XQuery customer), what ability do I have to produce Java code without proprietary dependencies?

Your Stylus Studio license grants you the right to use DataDirect XQuery and XML Converters from inside the Stylus Studio UI (running queries from the XQuery editor, converting files through the File > Open UI). But when you generate Java code and try to run it, then you are executing a separate application; and you will need a full DataDirect XQuery, and/or XML Converters license to be able to execute separate applications that rely on those components. More details at http://www.xquery.com/buy

If you need to evaluate how DataDirect XQuery can fit your Java application (or evaluate it from an API point of view), the easiest thing to do is to download a standalone DataDirect XQuery trial and use it for 14 days (http://www.xquery.com/download).

Hi Matthew,
you can generate standalone code with no dependency on DataDirect XML Converters or DataDirect XQuery by generating code for a scenario where the processor is Saxon and the 'use Stylus URI resolver' check box is not checked.

Hope this helps,
Alberto
