Jerry JanofskySubject: Problem With XSL-FO page breaks
Author: Jerry Janofsky

I am using RenderX XEP 4.6. I have created a document that uses an rx:flow-section to create an area displaying data with three columns. Before each three column area is displayed, I need to generate a line of text (header) that may span more than 1 column. Because the header may span more than one column, the block containing the header is placed above the rx:flow-section. Depending on the amount of data being printed, I can have multiple rx:flow-sections on a single page, also, it is possible that the rx:flow-section may span multiple pages. My problem is that, when a new header is being printed, it can often be the last item on the page, then a page break, then the flow section beginning on the next page. This is not acceptable. I need to somehow force the header to not be the last item on a page. The keep-with-next="always" attribute in the header block does not work (as your documentation states, it is unsupported in this context). Another possible solution to this would be to move the header within the flow-section, however, the problem with that is the header will scroll within a column and not span across the page. I cannot wrap the flow section within a block because it must be the child of fo:flow.

I’m hoping I am missing something obvious or that someone will be able to show me a trick to get around this problem.

All help and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

You might want to ask the RenderX folks that directly.
We've never bundled that particular version, but in any
event they are the experts on their product and on XSLFO
in general.

I have tried them already, but I haven't heard a direct reply yet. The problem is the version 4.6 doesn't support Keep-with-next. It is kind of a problem.

I am using Stylus Studio and the RenderX engine. Stylus Studio does not come with another version of an XSL-FO engine does it?

I believe the next version we will ship later in the year will
include at least RenderX 4.10.

But they will still be the experts in XSLFO ;)

Have you tried asking on xsl-list run by Mulberry Technologies?
(Although as a product-specific question, I still think the
RenderX forum would be your best shot.)

I think the answer from RenderX is I can't do it as I am trying because "Keep-with-next" in the context I am using it is not supported.

I was hoping for some work around that I haven't thought of. I will check out Mulberry as you suggest.

Hooking into XEP using the 'Custom post-process' the Stylus Studio provides has worked pretty well for me.
