John SaundersSubject: Sense:X - Visual Studio Does it Better
Author: John Saunders

I'm sorry to have to say it, but I'm learning to prefer the Visual Studio XML editor for editing XML with a schema. Here's why:

1) As I stated in another post here, I can associate a schema without changing the document.
2) It will only show me valid attributes - it won't permit me to duplicate them. This helps greatly when I'm trying to create an instance document containing all the possible attributes.
3) When completing an attribute value, it doesn't add an extra quote if there was already an end quote.
4) It does a better job (though not perfect) about offering valid elements. It will not list an element which is impossible at the given point based on what came before. Unfortunately, it _will_ offer one that's impossible based on what comes after.

Right now, this is the only XML task that I use Visual Studio 2005 for. You could fix these problems and keep me out of VS for XML!

Thanks,
John

John,

For validation purpose you can associate a schema to a Stylus Studio project folder, see
http://www.stylusstudio.com/docs/v2007R2/d_help9.html#wp1684667

Your suggestions on Sense:X make sense but some cannot be implemented without a trade-off on performance when working on very large XML files.

Hope this helps

Ivan, that would make a very nice setting for Tools->Options. There could be a setting for file size at which to turn off the expensive Sense:X features.
